Hiking on the Hochkönig: Family excursion to Mühlbach
I have always loved discovering my wonderful homeland by hiking. I now also enjoy the wealth of hiking trails and impressive mountain panoramas in Salzburger Land with my children. We benefit from the summer lifts in Ski amadè. The gondolas allow us to reach higher hiking destinations without a long climb. Even during the journey, we enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes from a bird's eye perspective, which often leads us to our next hiking destination.
Today I would like to introduce you to the Karbachalm gondola lift in Mühlbach am Hochkönig. The Hochkönig is worth a trip in itself, because I am always impressed by its beauty. There are many impressive hiking trails at the foot of this imposing mountain range and the neighbouring communities. The Karbachalm cable car takes you up to the Schneeberg opposite of the Hochkönig, which offers a fantastic view of the Hochkönig massif.
As soon as you get out of the gondola, you will be struck by the many possibilities on offer. Right at the mountain station, next to the Karbachalm, there is a fun water and sand playground to discover. Even the little ones will get their money's worth here. It is advisable for mum and dad to have spare clothes ready in their rucksacks. There are fine hiking trails in the surrounding area, which are barrier-free and therefore perfectly feasible with a pushchair.
Starting from the mountain station, there are two more attractions for slightly older children. Leading upwards, we find the alpine playground with many play stations, which also invite us adults to join in and have fun. Our children are particularly fond of the sand pit. Armed with shovels, we set off in search of glittering gemstones and are richly rewarded. At the end of the circular route, we come back to the Karbachalm and take the opportunity to take a break, cool off at the water fountain and savour some culinary delights at the mountain hut.
The second, new circular trail leads down from the mountain station and lets us discover one of the longest marble run hiking trails in the Alps. The 2-kilometre-long trail offers countless marble run stations, which impress with many details and offer a fun mountain experience for all members of the family. Even the most unmotivated kids will be spurred on to keep going, discover the next station and finally complete the trail.
Once everyone has had their fun, mum can drop off and leave the children with dad. Then it's a leisurely walk up and you'll find two peaks. One is the Schneeberg at an altitude of 1,921 metres and the second, the Schneebergkreuz, is about 10 minutes away at an altitude of 1,938 metres. There are several exciting circular hikes on the internet. But I go straight back to the starting point. Because there is another great attraction there, right at the mountain station.
I send the children back down into the valley with their dad and the gondola and borrow a mountain cart. After a short briefing and secured with a helmet, it's off down the 6.5-kilometre route into the valley. I lean into the rapid bends on the four-wheeled carts, enjoy the cooling breeze and reach high speeds. You are richly rewarded with adrenalin, action and a marvellous panorama.
Hiking is a great way to spend time together, enjoy nature and stay active at the same time. So pack your rucksack, slip into your hiking boots and off you go to the impressive mountains in Ski amadè.
